What is the Rising Main and Who is Responsible?
The incoming rising main is the underground water supply pipe that runs from the water company's main in the street to your property. While Wessex Water are responsible for the public water main in the road, the section of supply pipe from the boundary stopcock (or in some cases the meter) to the property is typically the responsibility of the homeowner or property owner.
Over time, rising mains can deteriorate, corrode, leak or become restricted — particularly older lead or early plastic pipes. When this happens, replacement is often the most cost-effective and practical long-term solution. Sherborne Utilities specialises in incoming rising main replacement for domestic and commercial properties across the South West.
We carry out all rising main replacements using modern MDPE (medium-density polyethylene) pipe, which is the approved material for new and replacement water supply pipe installations. MDPE pipe is durable, flexible, corrosion-resistant and fully approved under Water Regulations 1999.
As a Water Safe certified and Wessex Water approved contractor, Sherborne Utilities has the qualifications and experience to carry out rising main replacement work to the highest standards, with full documentation and compliance as required.
Benefits of Rising Main Replacement
A new rising main delivers immediate and lasting improvements to your water supply.
Improved Water Pressure
An old or deteriorated rising main can significantly restrict flow and pressure. A new MDPE supply pipe often results in a marked improvement in pressure throughout the property.
Compliance
Water regulations require that supply pipe work is carried out by competent, certified contractors. Our Water Safe certification ensures full compliance with all applicable standards.
Modern Materials
All replacement rising mains are installed using approved MDPE (blue plastic) pipe — the current standard for water supply installations, offering a design life of 50 years or more.
Water Safe Certified
Sherborne Utilities holds Water Safe certification, confirming our engineers are qualified to work on drinking water supply systems in compliance with Water Regulations 1999.
Our Rising Main Replacement Process
From initial assessment to completion, we manage the entire process professionally and efficiently.
Site Assessment
We assess the route of the existing rising main, its condition, the location of the boundary stopcock and internal stop tap, and any features that may affect the installation.
Planning the Route
We plan the most practical and least disruptive route for the new supply pipe, considering existing structures, driveways, gardens and the property entry point.
Installation
The old rising main is decommissioned and the new MDPE supply pipe is installed, connected to the mains at the boundary and brought into the property with a new internal stop tap where required.
Testing & Sign-Off
The new installation is pressure-tested and flow-checked. Where applicable, we notify Wessex Water and provide the necessary compliance documentation.
